Rumor: Oppo to announce smartphone camera technology for 10x optical zoom

Oppo would unveil a camera technology for smartphones on Wednesday, January 16 that enables 10x optical zoom. That announcement would follow a 5x optical zoom variant in 2017, which was never integrated into smartphones.

The announcement will take place in Beijing on Wednesday, according to GSM Arena, which relies on Chinese media. Oppo has sent out invitations to an event with a text that roughly translates as: ‘ten times the view, see you soon’.

Twitter user IceUniverse reported On December 25, an Oppo employee already learned that the company would announce a technique for 10x optical zoom at CES or the Mobile World Congress in February. This did not happen during CES.

It is still unclear whether Oppo will announce a smartphone with the technology or just the camera technology itself. The Verge points out that Oppo already unveiled technology for 5x optical zoom in 2017, but that it has not yet been incorporated into a smartphone that has come on the market.
