Nvidia will announce the new generation of Maxwell GPUs on September 9, and ten days later the introduction of high-end cards for the desktop, which will appear under the names GTX 980 and GTX 970, Videocardz claims. A GTX 960 will follow in October.

Naming in the 900 series, Nvidia is skipping the 800 series in desktop cards, Videocardz writes based on its sources. An 800M generation appeared in laptops. The site previously claimed that the new Maxwell cards for the high-end would appear under the names GTX 880 and 870, but recently Nvidia has made the decision to skip the 800 series.

This prevents the company from confusing the names of the desktop and mobile variants: with the 800M series for laptops, the fastest cards still have Kepler GPUs. In both cases, the 900 series will probably consist mainly of Maxwell cards.

On September 9, Nvidia would unveil its new Maxwell GPUs for the high-end and on September 19, the company will then unveil the GTX 970 and 980, with the benchmark results also allowed to be released. Specifications are not yet officially known, although it is clear that the gpus are still produced at 28nm, just like the current generation, that the memory bus is 256 bit wide and that 4GB gddr5 is present with the high-end cards. The type designation of the GPU would be GM204. Nvidia already released the GTX 750 and GTX 750 Ti with Maxwell chips earlier this year, but those were mainstream cards based on the first generation of Maxwell.
