Rumor: Nvidia releases canceled RTX 4080 12GB under new name

Nvidia is reportedly going to release the GeForce RTX 4080 with 12GB of memory under a different name. According to YouTube Channel Gamers Nexus manufacturers are in any case partly reimbursed for already produced boxes for already canceled GPUs.

In its own words, Gamers Nexus has had “enough conversations with sources” to assume that the canceled RTX 4080 with 12GB of memory will be released under a different name, presumably as RTX 4070 or RTX 4070 Ti. The new name would be accompanied by a price drop, although the YouTuber does not mention concrete prices. The updated video card would be released during CES tech fair in January of 2023.

Gamers Nexus further reports based on conversations with two manufacturers that Nvidia will at least partially reimburse the costs of board partners for boxes already produced for the relevant RTX 4080. It is not clear to what extent the company will offset further costs. After all, the former RTX 4080 12GB must, among other things, be provided with new sku stickers and bios firmware.

For the time being, Nvidia itself has not announced anything about a possible release of the relevant video card. However, the manufacturer emphasized that specifically the name of the RTX 4080 12GB was the problem; this could cause confusion. One of the criticisms of the video card was the relatively modest AD104 GPU, which would not fit the segment in which the RTX 4080 is released, which would support the theory of a new name intended for the lower segment.
