Nvidia is said to be planning to release the successors to the GeForce 980M and 970M for laptops in the second half of 2016. These would still be based on the GM204, but have better specifications than the predecessors.

The fact that the Geforce 980MX and 970MX will replace the current Geforce top models for laptops in the second half of 2016 is reported by the South Korean Hwbattle, which recently correctly announced the arrival of the Polaris name for AMD GPUs. .

With the Geforce 980MX, the GPU based on the Maxwell architecture gets 1664 Cuda cores, while the 980M has 1536 cores. The 970MX would have 1408 cores, while the current 970M still has 1280 cores. The clock speeds would also be slightly higher. The most powerful GPU for laptops remains the laptop version of the GTX 980.

This year AMD will release its energy-efficient Polaris APUs, including for laptops. Perhaps these 14nm finfet-transistor graphics chips will compete with the GTX 980MX and 970MX, should they appear.
