Rumor: Nvidia is working on GPUs with HBM2 memory

According to a new rumor, Nvidia is working on a GPU that it will likely present as GTX 1080. The consumer card will be made with HBM2 memory and would be made on a 16nm process with Nvidia’s new Pascal architecture.

The information about the suspected GTX 1080 comes from hardware site Tweaktown. The site speaks of two new cards, one of which is intended for consumers. It has a 4096-bit memory bus. In addition, it has the second-generation stacked HBM memory on board, which would be clocked at 1GHz. This so-called ‘3D memory’ makes it possible to get more memory on a smaller surface, which saves space and should save power consumption. The AMD Fury and Fury X, among others, use the first-generation HBM memory.

The GPUs are based on Nvidia’s new Pascal architecture. This is obvious, because the company has been talking about this for some time and is planning for release in 2016. The Pascal-based GPUs will be made on a 16nm process from TSMC. According to Tweaktown, it is obvious that the new card, with 4-Hi stacked memory, will be called GTX 1080. There will also be a second variant for the professional market.
