Rumor: Nintendo will release a new version of Switch next year
Nintendo plans to release a new version of the Switch next year, according to sources from The Wall Street Journal. It is not yet clear which improvements the new model will receive, but the Japanese manufacturer would consider a better screen.
The newspaper relies on suppliers and other sources who have knowledge of Nintendo’s plans. They say that Nintendo is still thinking about the innovations that the overhaul of the Switch console will receive. The improved device should be released in the second half of 2019, possibly already in the summer.
One option Nintendo is considering is installing a better screen. Nintendo will probably continue to use an LCD, a switch to OLED is not expected. The new version could have a thinner LCD with higher brightness and better efficiency.
If Nintendo releases a new Switch next year, it will almost certainly be a model that is compatible with the current version and shares many features. Nintendo regularly releases relatively minor updates to its handhelds. The console as a platform will run for several years.
Between the Switch’s release on March 3 last year and June 30 this year, Nintendo has sold 19.7 million units of the console. Those are good numbers, but with a hardware overhaul, Nintendo would like to push sales further.
