Rumor: Nintendo wants to increase Switch production to 25 million copies
According to sources familiar with Nintendo’s plans, the company plans to produce 25 to 30 million Switch consoles in its upcoming fiscal year, which starts in April. The Japanese company could further increase this number.
That depends on the console’s sales figures during the holiday season, the sources tell The Wall Street Journal. Nintendo is said to have informed its partners of its intentions. Nintendo recently announced at the presentation of its quarterly results that it has sold nearly 8 million units of the Switch to date.
The company initially expected to sell 10 million units in the first year after the Switch’s release, but revised that expectation to 14 million for the current fiscal year. It therefore took the decision to increase production. The Switch went on sale in March of this year and 3.6 games have been shipped per console; the total now stands at 27.48 million Switch games.
During the presentation of the quarterly figures, Nintendo gave insight into the way buyers use the console. It turned out that the handheld mode is more popular with players compared to its placement in its dock. The largest group of players in the US market are predominantly men between the ages of 25 and 34.
