Rumor: music streaming service from TikTok owner ByteDance will start in December
The music streaming service from ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, is set to become available in some countries during December. Presumably, the service will first appear in countries such as Brazil, India and Indonesia, where competition is not yet so fierce.
There had been rumors for months that ByteDance was working on its own music streaming service. Although the company is reportedly still in negotiations with record labels Sony, Universal and Warner, the Financial Times cites sources that say the service will start on a modest scale next month.
The music service would first come out in a number of poorer countries, such as Brazil, India and Indonesia. The market share of competitors such as Spotify and Apple Music is smaller there than in the West, and in a country like India ByteDance has already concluded deals with various record companies, Bloomberg reported earlier. The Chinese company would later like to introduce the service in the United States, but when is not known.
According to the Financial Times, the new service’s app will allow users to search video clips, create a playlist of songs and share them with friends. The subscription price of the music streaming service is said to be lower than that of competitors.
It comes as no surprise that ByteDance is building its own music streaming service. Music also plays a major role in TikTok, especially the sharing of videos in which users play songs. ByteDance naturally hopes that many TikTok users, which are now more than a billion, will also get started with the new music service.
