Rumor: Microsoft will cut thousands of jobs in the short term

Microsoft may be making a major restructuring announcement this week that will see thousands of jobs disappear, Bloomberg claims, citing sources within the company. It would be the largest job cut at the Redmond group in five years.

More jobs may be lost in the reorganization than in the 2009 restructuring, when Microsoft cut 5,800 jobs, Bloomberg writes, citing sources familiar with the plans. On Monday, there were also reports about an upcoming job cut; an analyst predicted this would happen after the release of a major memo from Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. In it he writes that the organization will change, old traditions disappear and fewer people will make decisions.

With the possible upcoming reorganization, overlapping functions created by the Nokia acquisition will probably disappear. In addition, according to the sources, jobs in marketing from the Xbox division, among others, are disappearing and there is a good chance that technicians and software testers will be laid off. At the most recent report in early June, Microsoft had 127,104 employees worldwide. This includes 30,000 employees who joined the company after the Nokia acquisition.
