Rumor: Microsoft to announce cheaper next-gen Xbox in August
Microsoft would like to show a cheaper version of its next-gen game console in August. The console’s name might be Xbox Series S and it should be released at the same time as the more powerful Series X.
The intention was to show the Xbox Series S, codenamed Lockhart, at the E3 fair, Eurogamer reports. When that fell through, a new moment had to come and that will be August, according to the site. Information about the cheaper console came out earlier through, among other things, the SDK for the next-gen Xbox.
The Series S would be a cheaper variant of the Xbox Series X and could then be released without a disc tray. Setting LockhartProfiling in the sdk ensures that the devkit with 7.5GB ram, slightly lower clock speeds and about 4 teraflops of GPU performance. Developers would be able to test their games with the lower specs of a second Xbox Series console, the idea seems to be. The Xbox Series X offers 13.5GB of RAM and 12 teraflops of GPU performance.
