Rumor: Microsoft puts Surface Duo software development on the back burner

Microsoft is said to have put the development of new features and upgrades for the Surface Duo phones on the back burner. Windows Central deduces this from the recent update policy and information from Microsoft.

The last major upgrade was from October last year and since then only a single bug has been fixed, reports Windows Central. Additionally, the Surface Duo phones do not have the feature to access Bing Chat from the Swiftkey keyboard. The integration of Bing Chat in the keyboard does work on phones from other manufacturers. The ChatGPT-based Bing Chat is one of Microsoft’s most important new products.

The Surface Duo has also not received the regular patch from April this year and it is the first time that Microsoft has not released a patch, the site states. There don’t seem to be any plans for Android 13 upgrades. In addition, Windows Central has heard that the team that worked on supporting the Surface Duo is now working on Teams Rooms, Android-based software for video conferencing equipment, for example.

There would be a foldable version of the Surface Duo. It should be released at the end of next year. Microsoft promised three years of support for the Surface Duo at release. That period has not yet expired. The Surface Duo 2 was released a year later. Microsoft has not commented on the rumor.
