Rumor: Microsoft is working on Xbox console that should work with Oculus Rift
Microsoft is said to be working on an Xbox console that will work with the Oculus Rift. That’s what anonymous sources say to game site Kotaku. That console should be released next year. Before that time, there would be a more compact version of the Xbox One.
The new Xbox for 2017, which Microsoft would make under the codename Scorpio, should be “technically capable” to support the Oculus Rift, claims Kotaku. This is done, among other things, by installing a more powerful GPU. Microsoft and Oculus would extend their current partnership for this console. At this point, Microsoft and Oculus are already working together, and Facebook’s subsidiary is packing an Xbox One controller into the box with the Rift to control games.
With the move, Microsoft would have a response to Sony, which will release PlayStation VR this fall, which allows players to play in virtual reality. Although Nintendo has not yet announced any plans in this area, it will present its NX in the near future. Apart from the code name, little is known about the Nintendo NX, but there are also rumors that it has something to do with VR.
In addition to the Scorpio, Microsoft is also said to be working on a more compact Xbox One for release this fall. According to one of Kotaku’s sources, it would have a hard drive with a capacity of 2TB, double the maximum currently available.
According to previous rumors, Sony is also working on a new version of its console that should be released this fall. This would be more powerful and should probably be able to run games at 4k resolution.
According to Kotaku, Microsoft is switching from releasing a radically different console once every few years to more consoles that are less different from each other. Games must support multiple versions of the console. Microsoft and Oculus declined to comment on the rumours.
