Rumor: Microsoft is working on wireless earphones
Microsoft is said to be working on its own version of wireless earphones. The company unveiled its first wireless headphones last year and is looking to use that expertise to make another wireless audio product as well, the website Thurrott.com reports.
The product’s code name is Morrisson, presumably named after The Doors frontman Jim Morrisson, claims Thurrott.com. The final name could be something like Surface Buds, but that’s not fixed yet, the site says. It is also unknown when they will be released exactly, but a release this year would be a possibility.
It is unclear how Microsoft would like to distinguish its earphones from the competition. Presumably they offer Cortana integration and noise canceling. Also, there should be a mode to make it easier to read things on the phone, the article states, but details are not there. Microsoft brought in its Surface Headphones last year and previously released wired earphones for its Zune music player.
Microsoft wouldn’t be the only one working on wireless earphones. Amazon would also be working on it. There are already more companies on the market with such a product. Samsung has had its Gear IconX line for a few years and recently the Galaxy Buds, while Huawei makes the FreeBuds and there are many alternatives from smaller manufacturers. Apple is the market leader with its AirPods.
