Rumor: Microsoft is considering acquiring GitHub

Microsoft appears to be seriously considering acquiring GitHub. The company would have discussed it with people close to the company. GitHub made it clear last year that it wanted to remain independent.

The rumors come from Business Insider sources. According to the website, Microsoft and GitHub have discussed a possible acquisition several times in recent years, but these have become more serious in recent weeks.

According to Business Insider, GitHub has been looking for a new director for the past ten months after co-founder Chris Wanstrath announced he would step down. The company announced in 2017 that it would remain completely independent and eventually want to go public.

It is not clear how much money would be involved in such a takeover. At a last estimate in 2015, GitHub was valued at $2 billion, though Business Insider estimates the price tag of an acquisition could exceed $5 billion.
