Rumor: Microsoft is considering acquiring EA
Microsoft is rumored to be considering acquiring game publisher EA. There are no details about the plans in that direction, but Microsoft would be eagerly looking for exclusive games for the Xbox One. Acquisitions from Valve and PUBG would also have been considered.
The rumor comes from Polygon, which mentions the acquisition plans in an article about the lack of exclusive games for the Xbox One. The site relies on a single source in its claim about considering EA to acquire it, which Polygon calls “trustworthy” and “close to Microsoft.”
According to Polygon, the rumors regarding possible takeover plans from Valve and PUBG are ‘whispered’. Financially, an acquisition of EA would be a possibility. Microsoft has $130 billion to spend and EA’s market value is $35 billion.
Still, a takeover of such magnitude seems unlikely. In 2014, Microsoft acquired Minecraft developer Mojang for $2.5 billion. In the past, Microsoft acquired Bungie, Rare and Lionhead studios, among others.
