Rumor: Microsoft delays second Windows 10 Redstone update until 2017
The second part of the massive update to Windows 10, called Redstone, won’t be released until Spring 2017, not 2016, rumored to be. The first part should appear in June and would mainly revolve around the Universal App Platform.
That the two Redstone updates won’t both appear in 2016 is reported by WinBeta, which regularly releases Microsoft news based on its sources. Microsoft is said to be working on the first update under the name RS1 and it will bring improvements to the Universal App Platform in June. The update should ensure that the Windows Store on the Xbox One can be accessed and that more win32 and iOS apps can be found in the store via ports. In addition, RS1 should also mark the release of more major games for both PC and Xbox One, something Microsoft kicked off last week.
RS1 also brings the ability to handle phone calls and text messages from a Windows 10 Mobile device to the PC via Continuum. Ultimately, Continuum should be deployed beyond just Windows smartphones and include a range of functionalities that connect Windows devices together. The Edge browser will also get extensions with RS1 and developers can start work on this with a preview in the short term. Furthermore, the appearance of the notification center, the settings menu and the Start Menu would be slightly adjusted.
It is not known what adjustments RS2 will bring next year, but it would in any case concern the functionalities that for whatever reason have not reached RS1. Microsoft would also focus more on first-party apps with this update. The arrival of Redstone was already revealed last April.
