Meta is said to be working on a cheaper version of its Quest 3 headset. It should work without controllers to reduce the price of the device. There would also be a more expensive version.

The former Facebook aims to make a cheaper headset without sacrificing screen quality, reports Bloomberg author Mark Gurman in his newsletter. By making the headset work without controllers and with only hand gestures, the cost could be reduced. Meta also wants to use cheaper parts.

The current Quest 3, which costs 549 euros, would then become the middle option next year, because there will also be a successor to the more expensive Quest Pro. Gurman does not mention what it will offer and at what price. According to Gurman, Meta is ‘afraid of Apple’ after the announcement of the Vision Pro last summer. The Vision Pro will be available for sale from next year, but will initially only be released in the US and will also cost $3,500. In addition to enabling controller-free operation, Meta wants to focus the headsets more on practical applications and talk less about the metaverse. The steps the company is taking to this end are said to stem from the fear of Apple within Meta.
