Rumor: Meta drops details on consumer-oriented AR glasses

Meta has scrapped some details from its consumer-facing AR glasses. The Information reports this. The glasses codenamed Artemis should be released in 2027. A pair of glasses aimed at developers will be released first.

Instead of newer microLED screens, the glasses would have Liquid Crystal on Silicon or LCoS screens, reports The Information. This is a technology that has been in use for decades and which means less brightness and probably a smaller viewing angle.

As a result, the viewing angle would also be less than intended. Meta aimed for a field-of-view of 70 degrees, but that will probably be around 50 degrees. That is approximately as much as the Microsoft Hololens or Magic Leap One.

In addition, the ‘puck’ that comes with it and additional hardware would no longer contain a lidar scanner to map the environment. That was the intention, but it is no longer in the design. The ‘puck’ still has a 5G modem, a battery and a touchpad. The Artemis glasses were first rumored a year ago.
