Rumor: LG will announce smartphone with curved OLED screen later this year

LG will present a smartphone with an OLED screen later this year. That’s what a South Korean site claims. The last smartphone with its own OLED screen is the G Flex 2, which appeared on the market two years ago.

It is the presumed successor of the LG V20, a device that appeared last fall but was not released in Europe. LG would start mass production of the curved OLED screen for this phone before the summer. The bend would be the same as that in Samsung devices such as the S7 Edge and Galaxy S8, reports The Investor. The G Flex 2 does have a curved OLED screen, but that bend is different and roughly gives the device a shape like a banana.

In addition to its own device, LG would also supply the screens to the Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi. He equipped the Mi Note 2 last year with an OLED screen from LG and wants to provide the successor again this year with a display from the LG factories. Google has also reportedly invested money in LG’s OLED factories for the production of smartphone screens. Last year’s Google Pixel has an OLED screen from Samsung.

Although the South Korean electronics maker is the only one that produces OLED screens for TVs, Samsung screens are dominant in the field of smartphones. In addition to its own devices, Samsung also supplies displays to Huawei, OnePlus, Lenovo and, reportedly, Apple from this fall.
