LG wants to put the first rollable TVs in the shops around 2020. The large TVs must be able to be rolled up to the size of, for example, a small bag, so that they can be taken with you. LG is considering equipping the TVs with batteries.

Users can roll out the TV wherever they want to watch TV without being tied to a fixed location for the device, The Korea Times claims based on conversations with LG employees. LG is currently already making curved displays for TVs and smartphones, among other things, but users cannot bend them themselves, because the other hardware is not bendable.

According to the sources of the South Korean medium, there are still “many technical hurdles” to overcome before the rollable TV is ready for mass production. LG is preparing a 55-inch prototype, which could be shown early next year at CES electronics fair in Las Vegas.

Rollable screens have been a concept for display makers for years. The technology that should make this possible is OLED based on a plastic substrate. In addition to rollable TVs, rollable tablets and smartphones could be a possibility, as the technology enables large-screen devices that still fit in a pocket.

Update, 14:15: Samsung is rumored to be releasing a smartphone with a rollable screen around the same time that LG would show a rollable TV. The manufacturer is said to be developing it under the name Project Valley.
