According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will release an iPhone in two years with a fingerprint scanner behind the screen. However, Face ID would also remain available and Apple would like to combine the biometric techniques for authentication.

According to MacRumors, the analyst states that many technical hurdles will be overcome in the next year and a half, making fingerprint scanners behind the screen better. Apple would like to wait for that. According to Kuo’s report, Apple is likely to use a variant of Qualcomm’s ultrasonic fingerprint scanner. It would be an instance where users can place their finger on a large part of the screen.

The report claims that Apple sees facial recognition and fingerprint security as complementary. Kuo thinks the iPhone manufacturer will combine the techniques. Since the arrival of Face ID, the fingerprint scanner has disappeared from iPhones. Android manufacturers have been making smartphones with a fingerprint scanner behind the screen for a long time, but in general it works slower than scanners that are incorporated into the housing itself.

Last month there was also a rumor about the arrival of a fingerprint scanner behind the screen in iPhones. It was then stated that the technology would come to Apple’s phones next year and that the Face ID scanner would disappear. Kuo’s new report contradicts that.
