Rumor: iPhone 14 Pro gets thicker camera island due to 48-megapixel sensor

The iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will reportedly get a thicker camera island to make room for a 48-megapixel sensor. The camera’s lens will be 5 to 10 percent higher, says Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.

That writes the generally well-informed Ming-Chi Kuo on Twitter. Kuo responds with the tweet on leaked designs who showed a week ago that the upcoming iPhone will be thicker than its predecessor. The main reason for this, Kuo says, is that Apple will upgrade the wide camera to a 48-megapixel sensor, which will be 25 to 35 percent larger, with a 7P lens that is 5 to 10 percent higher than the current lens.

Nothing has been announced about the iPhone 14 Pro or Pro Max yet, but Kuo previously claimed that the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max are equipped with a new A16-soc with 6GB Lpddr5 memory, and the regular iPhone 14 of an A15 -soc with 6GB Lpddr4 memory. Apple is expected to announce the new iPhone models in September. Analyst Ross Young also said that the iPhone 14 will have two new holes in the screen for the cameras and sensors and that the notch will disappear.

The rumor about the thicker camera bump is at odds with previously shown renders by leaker Jon Prosser. He showed an iPhone 14 Pro Max without a notch and without a camera island. The cameras would be incorporated into the back of the phone and the screen would have a single punch-hole for the selfie camera, something Kuo previously also claimed.
