Rumor: Intel to announce Skylake processors for desktops in August – Update
Information has emerged on the Internet about the launch period of the Skylake processors for desktop systems. The successor to Broadwell would get an introduction start in August, the month in which Intel’s IDF 2015 event also takes place.
The introductory period for Skylake, which is stated on the document that VR-Zone managed to obtain, covers August through October. According to VR-Zone, which regularly publishes Intel documents, the introduction coincides with IDF 2015. In recent years, Intel held its Developer Forum in September, but this year it is indeed from August 18 to 20, which means that the Skylake introduction in that month seems likely.
The document mentions Skylake-S, the desktop variant, which consists of processors with TDPs of 35W, 65W and 95W. It is not known whether the other variants of the processor generation will be announced at the same time. Skylake is the successor to the current Broadwell generation and is also produced at 14nm, but also gets a changed architecture. The details about Skylake have come online before. Skylake processors support ddr4 and are combined with another socket, LGA 1151.
Update, 12.00: Initially the message said that Skylake will probably be a bit slower than Broadwell Unlocked, based on a previously released roadmap, but there is no further indication of this. The performance differences between Skylake and Broadwell Unlocked are still unknown. It is also still unclear what the differences in terms of graphics performance will be. The Skylake processors will have a new generation GT2-igp, while the Broadwell Unlocked chips will receive GT3-igps with edram and twice as many eus.
