Rumor: Intel plans to cut thousands of jobs
Jobs may disappear again at Intel. That would have to do with disappointing business results, it is rumored. The chip designer has already reduced its workforce several times in recent years.
The reporting comes from the American newspaper The Oregonian, which claims to have been informed by multiple sources within Intel. There are said to be plans to lay off a total of ‘thousands’ of people, although no precise figures were given. The layoffs could reduce the workforce in some areas of the company by tens of percent. Some offices could also be closed as part of the reorganisation.
Intel itself has not yet officially confirmed that it will reduce its workforce. According to The Oregonian sources, that could happen at the earliest Tuesday, when the company will release its latest quarterly results.
It wouldn’t be the first time Intel has fired employees. Last year, 1,100 jobs were cut in the United States, and two years ago, 5,000 jobs were lost. The layoffs are mainly related to disappointing demand due to the shrinking PC market, where Intel generates the majority of its revenue.
