Rumor: Intel Core i7-8700K and Core i5-8600K will get six cores
Canard PC has published information about Intel’s upcoming Coffee Lake CPUs. The top model, the Core i7-8700K, is said to be a hexacore with hyperthreading and a base clock of 3.7GHz. There would also be i5 models with six cores, but without hyperthreading.
The Coffee Lake processors, or eighth-generation Intel Core CPUs, are similar in microarchitecture to Skylake and Kaby Lake. They will also be made at 14nm and will be available for the lga1151 socket ‘within months’. The biggest innovation would be the arrival of hexacores to the consumer platform. So far, Intel has only released processors with six cores or more on its hedt platforms.
The French magazine has put the information about the upcoming Coffee Lake processors on its website. Canard PC is known for its good resources in the industry. At the beginning of this year, it released information about the Core i7-7740K and i5-7640K, which turned out to be correct.
Canard PC states that it has information because the first samples of the processors have been sent out. The top model will probably get type number Core i7-8700K and would run at a base clock of 3.7GHz. That’s slower than the i7-7700K, which runs at 4.2GHz, but the new model has two extra cores. It is not yet known what the turbo speed will be.
Intel would also release hexacores in the i5 series: the Core i5-8600K with a base clock of 3.6GHz and the Core i5-8400, which is not overclockable, with a clock speed of 2.8GHz. Like the current i5 processors of the Kaby Lake generation, the Coffee Lake copies do not get hyperthreading.
Processor | Cores/Threads | Clock speed | Turbo | L3 | tdp |
Core i7-8700K | 6/12 | 3.7GHz | nnb | 12MB | 95W |
Core i7-8700 | 6/12 | 3.2GHz | nnb | 12MB | 95W |
Core i5-8600K | 6/6 | 3.6GHz | nnb | 9MB | 95W |
Core i5-8400 | 6/6 | 2.8GHz | nnb | 9MB | 65W |
Intel also comes with Coffee Lake processors for laptops with six cores. However, these will have a lower clock speed. According to Canard PC, Intel is testing with 2GHz processors that have a tdp of 45W. Currently Intel has quad cores in the HQ series for laptops with the same TDP.
In addition, economical quad-cores for laptops should appear in the U-series. For example, there would be a test platform with a quad-core CPU at 2GHz, with hyperthreading and 6MB cache. The chip would be equipped with a GT3e GPU with edram and the tdp would be 28W. Currently, Intel only offers dual cores in the U-series of fuel-efficient laptop processors.
The new information matches previous reports and leaked roadmaps. For example, an Intel roadmap appeared at the end of May stating that the Coffee Lake generation will be announced in August or September, along with the Intel Z370 chipset. In addition to the hexacores, there would also be quadcores.
