Huawei is rumored to be working on its own operating system under the name Hongmeng. The software could reportedly run all Android apps and launch for the first time in the fall of this year or at the latest in the spring of next year.

At least that is what Huawei Central claims, which claims to have ‘confirmed’ the news with sources. Huawei Central does not have a significant track record in terms of rumours, so nothing can be said about the veracity of the rumor. The OS could run on smartphones, tablets, TVs and wearables. The name Hongmeng appeared on Monday already in Chinese media to designate Huawei’s operating system. Huawei would like to gradually use it to replace Android. Further details about the software are unknown.

Huawei has reportedly been working on its own OS for years if it is necessary to use an alternative to Android. That moment came very close this week after it turned out that Google was forced to break with Huawei and revoke the Android license. However, the US government granted a three-month delay.

According to Reuters, Huawei says it has been a victim of bullying by the US government and is working with Google to lift the ban.

Update, Wednesday 08.30: According to Chinese media, Huawei’s CEO Richard Yu has said that “Huawei OS,” as he called it, will be released in the fall with a possible rollout into spring 2020. He also said the OS supports Android applications and that smartphones, tablets, TVs and wearables will run the software. Huawei Central probably invokes these statements.
