Huawei is rumored to be setting up a graphics chip development department. The Chinese manufacturer would focus on recruiting Nvidia employees, among other things.

It would not be about GPUs for consumer products, but about graphics chips for data centers, artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Behind the scenes, Huawei has been working on GPU technology since 2012. That reports GSM Arena based on an article by the Chinese Mydrivers, which in turn relies on unnamed Korean media.

It is no secret that Huawei develops chips for data centers. Last year, the company announced the Ascend 910, a data center processor optimized for artificial intelligence computing, combined with MindSpore, an AI framework. With fp16 calculations, that chip offers 256 teraflops with a maximum consumption of 310W. Huawei uses the chip for its own servers and Atlas AI Computing Cluster.

For a lot of high performance computing in data centers, GPUs are the best option and Nvidia is the market leader here with its Tesla accelerators. According to the rumor, Huawei would like to hire Nvidia employees for its GPU department.
