Rumor: HTC won’t release smartwatch after all

HTC would like to cancel its smartwatch shortly before the expected launch. Pocket-lint reports this on Friday based on unnamed sources. Those sources do not say why the Taiwanese company is reportedly abandoning the plans.

Pocket-lint says it does not know why HTC would want to cancel the smartwatch. Sources do not want to formally confirm that. A source did say that rising costs and the lack of the ‘wow’ factor probably played a major role in the decision.

The rumor is highly remarkable, because a week ago it came out that the first wearable from the electronics manufacturer may be on the shelves next month. The device is said to be called HTC CWZ and would appear in Europe, among other places.

According to the latest information, the watch strap from the Taiwanese manufacturer is made of metal and the screen of the watch is square. Presumably, the smartwatch runs on Android Wear, Google’s custom operating system intended for wearables. HTC has so far not released anything about the smartwatch, not even at the IFA in Berlin.
