Rumor: HTC is going to release GoPro competitor
Smartphone maker HTC is said to be working on a GoPro competitor, a standalone camera that serves as an accessory for a smartphone. The camera would be waterproof and cylindrical. HTC has invited the press to an event next month.
That event on October 8 is focused on cameras, as it seems from the hint ‘double exposure’ that HTC gives in the invitation. Bloomberg says that in addition to a camera for extreme sports, HTC will also present a ‘selfie smartphone’. What it would offer is unknown; current HTCs have front cameras with a maximum resolution of five megapixels. The front camera has recently turned out to be a reason for many buyers to choose a phone or not.
According to Bloomberg, the cylindrical camera is waterproof and has a ‘wide-angle lens’ with a maximum resolution of sixteen megapixels. To be able to connect to a smartphone, the accessory has Bluetooth on board, while WiFi would also be present.
As a financial news agency, Bloomberg is usually a reliable source and often has rumors that turn out to be correct, but occasionally the news agency is also wrong, in the past also with HTC-related topics. Sony previously made ‘adjustable lenses’ for smartphones.
