Rumor: Google X is working on technology for better batteries
Google is said to be developing battery technology in its secretive Google X lab. The company hopes to develop better batteries that can be used for various products it has in development, such as smart glasses and lenses.
A small research group has been set up within Google X, led by Ramesh Bhardwaj, a former battery expert at Apple. That is according to The Wall Street Journal, based on its sources. The team is conducting research into improving batteries based on conventional lithium ion technology, including so-called solid state batteries.
What exactly Google is planning remains unclear: The Wall Street Journal does not elaborate on it. As a result, it is not known to what extent the internet giant thinks it can improve the current batteries. The business newspaper does state that Google sees applications in various products it is developing, such as smart glasses and a lens with which blood sugar levels can be measured. Such devices could have a longer battery life with better battery technology.
It is not yet clear whether and when Google X will come up with a concrete improvement in battery technology. Since the research team is only four people, according to The Wall Street Journal, Google may see the project as little more than a pilot balloon.
