Rumor: Google wants to use radar technology to track sleep in smart screen
Google would like to use the radar technology it has developed under the name Soli to track sleep with a smart screen next to the bed. The radar would track users’ movements to see how they sleep.
Soli on Pixel 4 It is a product under the name Nest Hub, reports 9to5Google. The current Nest Hub is a smart screen with speaker that came out a few years ago under the name Home Hub. In the meantime, Google has put all its products with the Home name in the Nest series of smarthome products.
The new Nest Hub will probably also serve as an alarm clock next to the bed to, for example, dim the time at night and wake users up in the morning. The Soli radar would use the device to track movement in order to recognize patterns of sleep, according to the site.
Google previously said that the Pixel 4’s Soli radar would be making a comeback in other products. That happened before in a cheaper version of the Nest thermostat. The Soli radar works with radio waves, in the case of Soli between 57 and 64GHz. Google uses two modulation architectures for this: frequency modulated continuous wave and direct-sequence spread spectrum. The radio signals echo back from an object to detect movement in 3D.
