Google is working on a version of Android that can be installed directly in cars, Reuters claims. Unlike the current Android Auto, the operation would therefore not be based on smartphones.

With Android M, the next version of Google’s operating system, Google will introduce a variant that can be installed directly in cars, Reuters claims based on two sources that are familiar with Google’s plans. The operating system could therefore make greater use of car-specific components, such as sensors and cameras, and of the data supplied by components. It is expected that there will be more and more ‘connected cars’ in the coming years. The Android version would also give Google more foothold in the automotive market and guarantee that users will purchase its services.

With the current Android version, ‘Auto’ runs on the smartphone and is displayed on the in-car system. Google introduced Android Auto in the summer. Various car manufacturers have united in the ‘Open Automotive Alliance’ to develop Android for the car faster. Apple has a competing system in the form of CarPlay that is also supported by many manufacturers. If control systems are installed directly in the car, it is probably less easy to switch systems.
