Rumor: Google launches OS for internet-of-things applications

Google may unveil an operating system intended for Internet-of-things applications at its upcoming I/O conference. The OS could run on devices with only 32MB or 64MB of RAM.

This is reported by the website The Information based on anonymous sources. Google would develop the operating system under the codename Brillo, but the OS will probably eventually get a different name. It is not inconceivable that the iot operating system will fall under the Android umbrella.

Presumably during Google I/O, which will be held next week, the internet giant will reveal more about Brillo. It would be clear that the OS is intended to run on devices with relatively limited hardware. Brillo would settle for only 32MB or 64MB of ram.

It’s no surprise that Google is working on an iot OS. More and more companies are coming up with operating systems and software for internet-of-things applications. For example, Microsoft has developed a version of Windows 10 under the name Windows 10 IoT Core. This OS must be able to run on many simple devices, such as wearables. Various Linux variants are also targeting the emerging iot market, while Huawei recently announced an operating system that would be only 10kB in size.
