Rumor: Google is working on three smartphones for release this year
Google is reportedly working on three smartphones for this year. The rumors so far don’t mention any specs or details about the design, just the internal code names. As usual, the search giant has named the devices after fish and there is talk of a large smartphone.
The largest of the three is codenamed Taimen, reports Droid Life. The usually reliable Android Police confirms that it has also heard that code name. It doesn’t seem to be a regular Pixel phone. Android Police editor David Ruddock speculates on Twitter that it might be a cheap Android One device or that it is going to a Google phone with augmented reality technology Tango on board.
That requires a different camera setup on the back than many phones have now. Lenovo has so far released the Phab 2 Pro with Tango, while Asus is coming this spring with the Zenfone AR. The Google Pixel phones do not support Tango.
The two codenames for the presumed successors to last year’s Pixel and Pixel XL are “muskie” and “walleye.” The internet company previously hinted that it will come with successors for the Pixel phones in the fall.
