Rumor: Google focuses on battery and ram use with Android M
Android M, the next Android version, will receive more attention for memory and battery use if it is up to Google. That reports an Android fan site. Among other things, the number of location check-ins should be reduced.
Google is said to have instructed its Android development teams to make more efficient use of the battery, including by taking it easy with the memory. Also, the number of location checkins should be reduced and fewer operations performed when the screen is off and the phone is not on the charger. That reports Android Police. With Android L, Google also implemented the necessary battery savings.
Google is set to announce the changes at its I/O developer conference in San Francisco later this week. Some of the changes would run through Google Play Services, the part of Android that Google can update through the Play Store. This would also benefit devices that cannot update to Android M.
According to Android Police, Google wants to release the new Android version in August. It is not entirely clear what name the new Android version will bear; according to the Android fan site, the version is internally called Macadamia Nut Cookie, but that’s most likely not the name the outside world will see.
