Rumor: Facebook is working on a smartwatch that should hit the market in 2022
Facebook is reportedly working on a smartwatch. It would run on a modified version of Android and work closely with Facebook apps such as Instagram, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.
That is according to The Information, which has spoken with four sources ‘with direct knowledge of the device’. In addition to tight integration with Facebook’s services, the device would also put a lot of effort into user health functions. Specifically, compatibility with Peloton’s high-tech fitness equipment is mentioned.
On the technical side, the smartwatch itself should be able to connect to mobile networks, so it doesn’t have to rely on a bluetooth connection to a smartphone with SIM card. It is not known whether the smartwatch will have a SIM card slot or will use e-SIM.
The smartwatch is expected to hit the market in 2022. A second generation of the Facebook smartwatch would no longer run on Android, but on a self-developed system, about which reports have been circulating for some time. It may be on the market in 2023. In any case, the first generation would not be priced much higher than production costs to gain market share.
