Rumor: EA to decide whether Anthem overhaul will go ahead this week

Electronic Arts is rumored to be deciding the future of Anthem this week. The game came out in early 2019 and flopped. Last year, BioWare announced that the studio is working with thirty people on an overhaul. That team would be too small.

Three sources tell Bloomberg that EA’s top executives are reviewing the latest version of “Anthem Next” this week. A decision will then be made about the next steps. There are two options: either the team working on the revision is expanded, or the project is discontinued.

The team working on the improved version needs to be expanded considerably, according to the sources. Last year, BioWare announced that 30 developers are working on the Anthem overhaul. That team would be far too small to make the plans come true and would have to at least triple, say anonymous sources involved in the project.

Producer Christian Dailey led the team working on the Anthem overhaul, but took the role of executive producer on the Dragon Age games late last year after Casey Hudson left. As a result, it is unknown what the status of the Anthem revision is.

It is not clear whether EA wants to invest further in an attempt to make the flopped game succeed. Anthem has been in the works for years, but the game was received negatively due to technical problems and content shortcomings. The development took almost seven years, but the actual production only started in the last eighteen months. Before that, according to BioWare employees, constantly drastic changes were made, which made development more difficult. Anthem developers said there was indecision and mismanagement.
