Rumor: Discord is in talks with Microsoft about possible acquisition
Discord is in talks with Microsoft about a possible acquisition for about ten billion dollars, reports financial news agency Bloomberg. It would be far from certain that the deal will happen: Discord may also want to go public.
Discord has approached various parties about a possible acquisition, Bloomberg reports. The talks about a possible takeover came out on Monday through multiple media outlets, including Venturebeat. A move to the stock market is also a possibility, but because Discord is still running at a loss, that is not obvious according to several sources.
Discord is looking to sell for about $10 billion, which is $3 billion above last December’s valuation of the investment. The platform has about 140 million monthly users. Discord is mainly used as a chat platform for gamers, but is now also in use as a general chat platform.
Microsoft isn’t the first party Discord is talking to, Bloomberg says. Amazon and Epic Games have also shown interest in the past. Microsoft has made several major acquisitions in the past, including GitHub, Skype, LinkedIn and Nokia’s phone business.
