Rumor: Dell will release laptops with Qualcomm soc next year
Computer maker Dell will release laptops with Qualcomm socs next year. This is reported by the Taiwanese website UDN. The manufacturer would work with an entire division with an as yet unannounced soc codenamed Oryon.
These are laptops with the first soc that Qualcomm has made based on the work of Nuvia, reports UDN. Dell would work with the division on laptops that should appear on the market early next year and that run on the Oryon soc.
There have been laptops with ARM socs for years, but the market for them seems relatively small. There are models from Lenovo, HP, ASUS, Acer and Samsung, among others, with socs from the American processor designer. Microsoft is also working with Qualcomm on socs for its Surface products. In addition to an Intel version, the Surface Pro 9 also has an ARM version.
It has been known for some time that Oryon-soc should be released this year. Qualcomm acquired Nuvia two years ago for $1.4 billion. Nuvia is a company of ex-Apple chip designers working on proprietary ARM cores for servers. Qualcomm wants to use Nuvia’s designs in its own Snapdragon socs for laptops starting this year. With this, the company wants to compete with processor makers such as Intel, AMD and Apple. Qualcomm already makes laptop CPUs, but they use ARM-designed cores.
