Rumor: CIA prepares hack on Russia

The CIA is rumored to be preparing a digital attack on Russian targets. With this, the United States would like to take revenge on the alleged Russian state hackers who have hacked several American systems in recent times.

The rumors come from NBC News, which claims to have sources within the US government. According to these sources, the US government has asked the CIA to prepare a number of operations to hack Russian targets. The aim is to discredit the Russian government.

By now, the CIA is said to have already started drawing up plans and selecting targets. Documents have allegedly been gathered suggesting Russian President Vladimir Putin’s use of “unsavory tactics,” but more details have not yet been released.

The US government has previously hinted at a hacking attack against Russia. This has to do with a series of digital burglaries, in which the American Democratic party was the victim a number of times. Russian state hackers, allegedly acting on behalf of the Kremlin, were identified as the culprits. Putin, however, denied that his government had any involvement.

Just because the CIA has been asked to prepare hacking attacks does not mean they will actually be carried out. President Obama will have to approve the operations first, and it has been found in the past that the CIA has been asked to prepare operations, only to call them off later, two former CIA employees told NBC News. It is also possible that, by leaking this information, the US is trying to create a deterrent.
