Rumor: Blizzard had StarCraft shooter in development

Blizzard had a first person shooter in its StarCraft franchise in development for two years, but scrapped it to focus on Diablo and Overwatch. That is what Kotaku sources claim.

Kotaku writes that Blizzard was working on the StarCraft shooter under the project name Ares and that according to one of the sources it was “a kind of Battlefield in the StarCraft universe.” The intention was, among other things, that the player took on the role of a Terran to shoot Zerg down. There were also plans to offer the opportunity to play as Zerg.

The decision to scrap the game is said to have been made a few weeks ago. The sources speak on the one hand that the development was slow and on the other hand that it ‘looked good’. It is not known what stage of development Project Ares was in at the time of its decommissioning.

Blizzard has put the developers for the StarCraft shooter mainly on the development of Diablo 4 and Overwatch 2, the anonymous sources further claim. If the rumor is true, Blizzard is expected to announce both games at its BlizzCon conference later this year.

The developer previously worked on a StarCraft shooter: StarCraft: Ghost. This one revolved around the covert ops-Terran Ghost Nova. Blizzard announced this title in 2002 but announced in 2006 that the game had been canceled.
