Rumor: Apple will soon also release its own credit card outside the US

Rumors have it that Apple will soon release its own credit card outside of the United States. That should happen before the end of the year, whereby a European release does not seem out of the question.

The rumors come from MacRumors, who learned about the plans from a source at an Australian bank. That source states that Apple is working on the release of the Apple Card in ‘multiple new regions’, although no countries were mentioned by name. Given the source, Australia appears plausible as one of the eligible countries.

In addition, there are indications that the Apple Card is also coming to Europe; MacRumors discovered references to the European privacy legislation GDPR in the terms and conditions for the Apple Card in a beta version of iOS. Apple would then want to introduce the extension of Apple Card with the release of iOS 14.1 or 14.2, but in the event of a delay, this would only come with iOS 14.3. The latter version will not be released until early next year, according to the source of MacRumors.

The Apple Card came out to Americans a year ago. The underlying payment infrastructure is provided by Goldman Sachs, while Apple provides the software with an app on iOS. Recently, there is also a web interface that users can use to pay for their outstanding credit card bill. Apple is holding an event on Tuesday that is likely to announce new products, and it is possible that the expansion of Apple Card will be announced there as well.
