Rumor: Apple will provide some iPad models with OLED screens next year
According to rumors, Apple will provide some iPad models with an OLED screen next year. Those would be the first iPad models with such a screen; so far, the tech giant only released iPads with LCDs.
The screens would be provided by Samsung Display and LG, South Korean website ETNews writes based on its own sources. Those two companies would also work on OLED screens for Apple’s upcoming iPhones, and would have been working on such displays for iPads for some time.
According to ETNews, Apple would have made the choice because OLED screens would deliver better image quality, while weighing less at the same time. Apple previously switched to OLED screens for many of its iPhone phones.
It is not yet clear which iPad models would be equipped with OLED screens. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously stated that the next-generation iPad Air would be equipped with an OLED screen in 2022, MacRumors also writes. Miniled screens for iPads would be used exclusively in the Pro models. However, this has not yet been officially confirmed.
Apple has never released iPads with OLED screens before. The company switched to a miniled display for its iPad Pro 12.9 “with M1 chip earlier this year, but such displays are still based on LCDs. Apple is also expected to continue to release products with miniled displays. including Macbook Pro models with such a display.
