Rumor: Apple will equip iPads with bendable OLED screen from 2018
From 2018, Apple would like to equip iPads with OLED screens that may also be bendable. These enable a completely new design for the tablets, says the generally reliable analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
With a bendable screen, a new design is possible with changes in ‘user behavior’, MacRumors reports, based on a report from the analyst, who has often proven to have correct information in the past. Presumably, Kuo refers to, for example, foldable models, which enable a larger screen in a smaller design.
If the iPads get OLED screens, they will follow iPhones in that trend. There have long been rumors that Apple will use such screens for its smartphones from 2017, which competitors such as Samsung have been using in smartphones for years. With the arrival of Google’s VR platform Daydream, it seems that almost all high-end Android smartphones will get an OLED screen.
If Apple switches to OLED screens for tablets and smartphones, it will not be Apple’s first product with that screen technology. The Apple Watch already has an OLED screen, while it is rumored that a new MacBook Pro that should appear at the end of this year will replace the function keys with an OLED screen.
Before that, Apple would release an iPad Pro 2 with 12.9″ screen and iPad Pro with 10.5″ screen. Both presumably have an Apple A10X soc. In addition, a cheaper iPad would appear with a 9.7 “screen and presumably an A9X soc. Kuo says nothing about the smaller 7.9” series of iPad Minis.
