Rumor: Apple Watch Series 7 gets a function to measure blood sugar levels

Apple is reportedly coming this year with an Apple Watch Series 7, which would get a sensor that can measure glucose levels in blood. That is according to the South Korean ETnews. The next Samsung Galaxy Watch watch would also get such a function.

Apple and Samsung are expected to launch their respective smartwatches with blood glucose meters this year, ETnews writes. Samsung was set to unveil its upcoming watch in the second half of this year, at a Galaxy Unpacked event. The name of that watch is not final yet. The smartwatch would be sold as Galaxy Watch 4 or Galaxy Watch 3 Active, according to ETnews. The release period of the Apple Watch Series 7 is not mentioned, but previous models were invariably announced in September, with the exception of the original from 2015.

According to ETnews, Apple now holds several patents surrounding the blood glucose monitoring feature and is said to be focusing on ensuring the feature’s reliability and stability before launching it this year. It would be an optical sensor that is placed on top of the wrist. The function does not require a jab or implant, according to the South Korean news medium. Samsung already published results of a study into non-invasive blood sugar measurements in 2020, in collaboration with MIT scientists.

Rumors have been circulating for some time that Apple is working on a sensor that can measure glucose levels in blood. The American TV channel CNBC already stated in 2017 that Apple is working with experts for this. In recent years, the American tech company has already added several health features to its smartwatches. For example, the most recent Apple Watch 6 got a blood oxygen meter, in the form of an optical sensor. A blood glucose meter would be useful, among other things, for people with diabetes, who currently have to measure their blood sugar level with a prick in a finger or an implant.
