Rumor: Apple wants to release ar headset in 2022 and ar glasses to follow in 2023

According to The Information, Apple wants to release an augmented reality headset in 2022 and a year after that, more compact AR glasses should follow. Apple is said to have mentioned the dates during an internal meeting in October.

The Information claims that 1,000 employees attended the meeting. Mike Rockwell, who leads the Apple team working on ar devices, is said to have revealed new details about the design and features of the ar devices during the meeting. The Information relies on anonymous sources who were present at the event.

According to MacRumors, the article from The Information states that the ar headset will have a function to make 3d scans. The device would look like an Oculus Quest headset, but with a slightly slimmer design. The headset will reportedly have high-resolution screens and cameras.

Apple’s first ar device would be able to accurately capture environments and place virtual objects on them. This would have been demonstrated with a virtual coffee machine placed on a real table in a room with a number of people. The virtual coffee machine would disappear behind people as soon as they step in front of it.

Apple would like to encourage developers to make apps for the device next year. Perhaps this means that Apple will show the ar headset earlier than 2022. The headset would be known internally under the code name N301, while the AR glasses that should follow have code name N421. The latter glasses are said to have prototypes that resemble sunglasses with a thick frame.

The new information is different from rumors released in recent months. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said last month that Apple plans to release an ar device in 2021. The analyst is known for his close ties to sources within Apple, and he has often released accurate information prematurely in recent years.
