Rumor: Apple orders 70 million OLED panels from Samsung
According to new rumors, Apple has placed orders for curved OLED panels from the South Korean manufacturer Samsung. They should be used in 70 million new iPhone devices.
Sources within the supply chain reported the size of the order to the Japanese business newspaper Nikkei. The order is in line with an analyst estimate, who said the size would be 70 million screens this year and that the South Korean company would be able to supply 95 million panels if needed. In addition, Samsung would be the only supplier for Apple.
Apple has not yet made iPhones with an OLED screen, but according to previous rumors, that will change this year. Apple is expected to release three iPhones and that only the most expensive model will receive an OLED screen this year. According to current information, this is a curved 5.8 “screen. It would be a screen with a longer aspect ratio of 16:9. Samsung itself uses an 18.5:9 screen in its Galaxy S8.
There have been several reports about the OLED panels in the iPhone, Apple is also said to have held talks with Sharp and the Chinese BOE. The sources further inform the newspaper that all three new iPhone models are equipped with wireless charging technology, although overheating problems should currently be solved. While all models are waterproof, at least one has a 3D camera for facial recognition on board. The most expensive model would also miss the Home button.
