Apple is working on a paid health coach that uses AI and Apple Watch data to create coaching programs for users, Bloomberg reports. In addition, Apple’s Health app may come to the iPad with the introduction of iPadOS 17.

The AI health coach is internally called Quartz, writes Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who is known for his good sources at Apple. The service is intended to motivate users to exercise, improve eating habits and help them sleep better, insiders report to the news agency. The alleged service uses AI and data from an Apple Watch to create personalized coaching programs for specific users.

The service is scheduled for next year, but according to Gurman it could also be postponed or canceled. Several teams within Apple are working on the project, including the team behind the Health app, Siri and Apple’s AI team. Apple would charge a monthly fee for Quartz, which should be available as a separate app.

In the shorter term, Apple would make its Health app available for iPads. This should happen with iPadOS 17, which is expected to be presented in June and released at the end of this year. The iPad version of the app allows users to view ECG results from their Apple Watch in a larger format, among other things.

Later this year, Gurman says features will also be added to the Health app for tracking emotions and “managing visual conditions,” such as myopia. In its first version, users can record their mood, answer questions about their day and compare results over time. Eventually, Apple hopes the iPhone can use algorithms to determine users’ moods based on speech, typed words and other data.

The new iPad app and its emotion tracking features will be announced at Apple’s WWDC developer conference, according to Gurman’s sources. This will take place in early June. The AI coaching service Quartz has not yet been announced.
