Rumor: Apple is working on a computer with ARM chip on iOS
Apple would be working on a device in a new category; a kind of computer based on an ARM chip, which would run on iOS. It’s not entirely clear what kind of computer it is, but it’s rumored to be one in a new category of devices.
Sources report that to 9 To 5 Mac. The sources involved have not been disclosed, but it would be information from the parts suppliers who have knowledge of the production of the relevant device. Within Apple, the new device would be known under the code name Star. In concrete terms, this concerns a computer with a touchscreen, an ARM chip, GPS, SIM card slot and compass. The whole would also be resistant to water. There would be a derivative version of iOS running on the device.
Given the specifications, it is possible that it is a type of Mac that is intended to be used on the go. It is also possible that it is a kind of large iPhone; Rumors about such a device have come out before. According to the sources, however, it is a device that does not fall within an existing category of devices that Apple currently offers, so it is not yet possible to say how exactly it should be classified.
For now, there would only be a prototype that is being tested by Apple employees. Only around 2020 Apple would consider actually bringing the device to the market.
