Rumor: Apple is short of driver ICs for 120Hz screens for iPhone 12 Pro

Apple wouldn’t have been able to get enough driver ICs for the iPhone 12 Pro. The manufacturer had wanted to release the iPhone 12 with 120Hz screens. The manufacturer could have waited, but has decided to release the models with 60Hz panels, says an insider.

In addition to the screen, Apple also needs a driver that controls the screen and it is precisely that Apple cannot get enough of it on time reports Ross Young of analyst firm DSCC. Young has proven a number of times in the past year that he has accurate information about smartphone screens at an early stage, such as with the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra, Z Fold2 and Motorola razr 5G.

The OLED screens could handle 120Hz, but it is all about the hardware to control that screen. Young says in other comments that Apple can ‘move mountains’ and that it is therefore still possible in theory that the iPhone 12 Pro models get 120Hz screens. One solution would be to limit the quantities of 12 Pro phones for the first time.

There have been rumors for some time that Apple wants to release the 12 Pro models a little later than the two iPhone 12 phones. The regular models would come in October; the Pro models would follow in November. Apple has confirmed that it will release its iPhones later than usual this year.
